Matthew Jackson was born in Spokane, WA to South African parents. Throughout his childhood, he visited his parents' home country with his family, essentially becoming a second home to him. In 2011, he decided to make South Africa his primary home, at least for a year. He volunteered full-time with Ubom! Eastern Cape Drama Company, teaching in schools that dont offer drama as a subject. He toured all around the country with Ubom!, leading improv workshops at schools festivals around the country. But before going to South Africa, he studied Theatre Arts at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. He was in various plays, including several David Ives one-acts, playing Smee in Peter Pan, Robert Falcon Scott in Terra Nova, and Thomas in The Celtic Cross. Never heard of The Celtic Cross? Well, you will. The Celtic Cross While enrolled at UPS, he studied abroad in Dublin and London, where he saw a combined total of four billion plays and took several field trips. One of these field trips was to Belfast, where the idea of The Celtic Cross was born. After falling in love with the city, Matthew returned to Dublin where he emailed friend and fellow student Bryan Sullivan, saying something to this effect: Bryan~ Hey. Youll be in London next fall (Matthew was there in the summer of 08, Bryan in the fall) and youre gonna take a field trip up to Belfast and youre gonna love it as much as I did. Do you wanna do a two-man show with me when we both get back in the spring of 09? Sweet. Matthew Bryan wrote back shortly, saying something to this effect: Psh. Yeah. And so, Celtic Cross was born. Wanderweg Productions Bryan came over early before his Dublin program started, and in between Matthews Dublin and London programs, they spent two weeks traveling in France and Switzerland. They discussed ideas, read books, and read through the play together, taking The Celtic Cross from concept into reality. When they got to Switzerland, they went on a hike just outside of Fribourg, and they had no idea where they were. They kept following signs that said, Wanderweg. They didnt know what this meant, but it had the word wander in it, so it looked like itd be fun. (Turns out, it means footpath in German.) So thats how Wanderweg Productions got its name. Now Bryan and Matthew have started a theatre company in Seattle, named after their epic adventure in the mountains of Switzerland. Their first project is The Celtic Cross, but they have others in the works, so stay tuned! Comedy Matthew was a member of Ubiquitous They improv troupe at UPS, and he founded Naturally Caffeinated Improv Comedy at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. He is also a standup comedian, specializing in Christian comedy. He grew up going to a Presbyterian church, and found so many things hilarious about everyday churchy scenarios that he decided to become a comedian. But even when hes not talking about church, hes always clean.
