Since moving to Seattle from Boston, John Coons has crafted a genre-defying career as a performer in theater, opera, musical theater, and new media. Roles range from Zangara in “Assassins” (5th Avenue/ACT) to Oswald in “Ghosts” (ArtsWest) to Pirelli in “Sweeney Todd” (Eugene Opera). An advocate for new works, Coons was chosen to create all of the tenor roles in the three-opera “Our Earth” cycle, commissioned by the Seattle Opera. He has performed roles with the 5th Avenue Theatre, ACT Theatre, Seattle Opera, Eugene Opera, ArtsWest, 14/48, and Boston Opera Collaborative. As a soloist, Coons has performed with the Seattle Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Boston Symphony POPS, Atlanta Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Portland Symphony POPS, Bellevue Ballet, and sung the national anthem for the Red Sox at Fenway Park. In addition to performing with popular artists Ben Folds, Amanda Palmer, and Foreigner, his original one-man show, “Six Months for Six Weeks,” toured on both coasts and was released as a webseries, dubbed “funny and audacious” by CityArts magazine.
