Monique Holt holds a BFA in Acting from NYU/Tisch and MFA in Theatre Productions from Towson University. For her BFA graduation gift, she got her first Equity card, by playing Emily Webb in OUR TOWN, directed by John Dillon for the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre. She just finished her 7-month acting gig in two shows: ROMEO AND JULIET, directed by Dámaso Rodrigues and SNOW IN MIDSUMMER by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, directed by Justin Audibert from the UK, for Oregon Shakespeare Festival. She also directs plays. In 2016, for New York Deaf Theatre, she adapted and directed TITUS from Titus Andronicus into a dark grotesque circus show and worked with a mixed cast of hearing and Deaf mime performers, shadow puppetry and finger-mime artists behind the scenes. At universities and private acting studios, she had taught courses on acting, analyzing & translating scripts, utilizing theatrical movements, directing different theatre genres, developing a business plan as an actor, using Visual Gestural Communication in a theatre setting, and developing a solo performance. She still gives lectures on translating Shakespearean text to Artistic Sign Language at various universities, theatre and language organizations. Her manifesto for her MFA thesis: Universal Design in Theatrical Presentation - and she is still using this approach in her work and instilling the Visual Gestural Communication technique on stage work, whether it is a hearing or Deaf productions. The bottom line: Tell a story from a specific perspective with all the resources you have available to you.
